Packers, Colts Make Their Final Roster Cuts Ahead of 2023 NFL Season Kickoff

Green Bay Makes Surprising Cuts

Veterans and Young Guns Make Way for New Talent

The Green Bay Packers made a series of surprising roster cuts on Tuesday, August 15, ahead of the 2023 NFL season kickoff. Among the most notable departures were veteran wide receiver Tavon Austin and second-year cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles. Austin, a seven-year NFL veteran, had been a key contributor to the Packers' offense in recent seasons. However, the emergence of young receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs made him expendable. Jean-Charles, a former fifth-round pick, also failed to impress the coaching staff and was released.

The Packers also cut several other players, including long snapper Joe Fortunato, defensive end Kobe Jones, and offensive tackle Yosh Nijman. These moves leave the Packers with a roster of 53 players, the maximum allowed by the NFL.

Colts Trim Roster to 53

Several Key Players Released, Including Quarterback Nick Foles

The Indianapolis Colts also made their final roster cuts on Tuesday, August 15. Among the most notable departures were quarterback Nick Foles and running back Jordan Wilkins. Foles, a veteran of 12 NFL seasons, was expected to be the Colts' backup quarterback behind Matt Ryan. However, he was released after a disappointing preseason. Wilkins, a former third-round pick, was also released after a lackluster training camp.

The Colts also cut several other players, including wide receiver Ashton Dulin, cornerback Chris Williams, and defensive end Kameron Cline. These moves leave the Colts with a roster of 53 players, the maximum allowed by the NFL.

What's Next for the Packers and Colts?

The Packers and Colts will both open their 2023 NFL seasons on Sunday, September 11. The Packers will host the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field, while the Colts will travel to Houston to face the Texans.

Both teams will be looking to make a strong start to the season and compete for a playoff spot. The Packers are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 8-9 record in 2022, while the Colts are looking to improve on their 4-12-1 record from last season.
